March 2007: St Patrick’s Day Celebration

On March 16th & 17th SKAR organized the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day in the accordingly decorated ex-cafeteria of the “down building” (FFRi, Trg I. Klobucarica 1). The presentations of the first evening included: Irish mythology, the legend of Saint Patrick and Irish history. The topics of the second evening were: Irish language and literature, beliefs, customs and some trivia. The programme of the second evening also included a set of Irish music and we served a lot of Irish coffee and even more specially prepared Irish cakes to our guests.




April 2007: Department of English Promotional CD


In April 2007 SKAR members created an informative CD about studying at the Department of English in Rijeka, which was used as promotional material at the Universities’ Fair in Rijeka. The contents:





May 2007: Department of English 10th Anniversary Celebration


In May 2007 SKAR members planned and realized most of the programme organized as the celebration of the Department’s 10th Anniversary. It was held at Hrvatski kulturni dom – Sušak on May, 16th 2007. The parts of the programme realized by SKAR were a multimedia presentation about the history of the Department, a stand-up comedy act and a music act, while the rest of the programme included a drama interpretation of an award winning essay and another comedy act.




June 2007: USA in the ‘60s


On June 7th & 8th 2007 Day in the accordingly decorated ex-cafeteria of the “down building” (FFRi, Trg I. Klobucarica 1) SKAR organized two evening gatherings on the topic of “USA in the ‘60s”. SKAR members gave presentations on: turbulent political circumstances of the 1960s in the USA; the countercultures that developed at the time (hippies, yippies, the students’ movement, women rights movement, sexual revolution, anti-war movement); the art of the 1960s (abstract expressionism, conceptual art, hard-edge painting, land art, minimalism, lyrical abstraction, op art and pop art); the development of film; music of the sixties (girl bands, soul, blues, folk, psychedelic and progressive rock, Woodstock and Altamont festivals). One of the cult films of the sixties was shown on the first evening – Easy Rider, while the second evening ended with the 1960s music set. Guests loved our brownies and punch. :-)




October 2007: Pre-Halloween Shindig


On October, 30th 2007 SKAR organized another theme gathering – “Pre-Halloween Shindig”. The aim was to present the audience with customs of celebrating Halloween, its history, urban legends… The decorations hand-made by our members lifted the whole atmosphere, which was enriched by our own Halloween culinary specialties.

Financially supported by the Studentski zbor, Faculty of Rijeka we are in process of buying new books for the Department’s library thus trying to make materials for studying and paper writing more accessible to more (if not all) students.
